ABOUT
Julie Brown is a visual artist who was born in Pleasanton, California but has lived in Springfield, Illinois almost her entire life. Although her early work was in color field painting, her current paintings since the mid-1990s concern the figure, mostly from vintage and antique found photographs. Her aim is to convey a sense of the psychological presence that she sees in her subjects.
Julie has a degree in visual arts from UIS and earned her art education licensure through Quincy University. Before her retirement from teaching in May 2020, she had taught art at all levels – Pre-K through college – as well as adult learners in painting.
Julie Brown is also a musician and the bandleader of the jazz and bossa nova group Julie Jules & Co.
